Cycling

I like all things cycling. Riding a bike / trike (upright or recumbent) and working on bikes.

Especially working with creative solutions. smile

By request of several visitors, an update on how to import a GPX route file into OsmAnd:

setThe conversion kits to turn our Trident Trikes Stowaways into e-trikes are installed. The kits by Ebike Efos were delivered and complete, so last weekend I've started installing them. As this was the first time I've transferred a bike into an e-bike I was expecting that it would take over half a day to get it done, but it went pretty smoothly. Despite the rainy intermissions a week ago.

EFOSOver a year ago, I've reposted an article about why I wasn't going to ride anĀ  e-bike quite yet, but....

I'm not getting any younger and I find the longer you wait, the harder it gets to go back to frequent bike rides again. So, as the month of may is also the month for holiday bonus, I've started searching for information and reviews on e-bikes and suppliers. And yes, I'm gonna do it!

Although it has been about 6 months since I've last rode my trike, the cycling bug starts biting again. It seems that this bug may slumber but will never die (fortunately). In the meantime, it's wintertime. So short days and many dark hours. Especially for an convicted early bird like me. That's why I've been looking into lighted flagpoles for my trike to get a bit more visibility and safety.

I've been riding a trike since november 2016 now. And as with most of the bikes I have or had, it's been gradually modified to my needs and wants. The trike itself as delivered by Rudy from Jouta Ligfietsen was pretty good to start with:

Yesterday I went out for an easy and relaxed trike tride. Left a bit later than I planned (5:20 am) but it was still nice and quiet on the road. Some of the crossings on the N62 road were closed resulting in quite a hectic weekend in my village of Westdorpe due to heavy traffic. So I decided to ride the country roads and went east to greet the rising sun should the clouds give way.

For a long time, I've tried to do my 60km commute as often by bike as possible. But I'm on the other side of the “magical” or “big” 50 now and struggling a bit with my body. So more and more people ask me why I don’t buy an electric assist bike. To be honest, I’ve been thinking about it now and then, but I don’t like the thought of it.

For a while now, I was looking for a way to mount side bags to my trike. For easy to reach stuff while riding and for those things you want to keep an eye on. Like camera, keys, wallet, snacks, etc...

It's been about 6 months now since I've got my Trident Stowaway trike. Up until now I've only ridden about 400 km, but one thing I wanted to change from the beginning was the mirror! The Stowaway came with 1 mirror, on the left side.

From mechanical odometer and cycle computer to smartphone app. I've used it almost all. Nowadays I use both cycle computer and smartphone app. Cycle computer because I had it at hand (and while mounted on the bike it's not just lying around), app because I like to look back at the rides I've been doing.

Last week I've brought my old Flandria bike to the recycling center.  cry I had 4 bikes in the shed and next month my wife will probably be buying a trike too. SoI had to make room for another tricycle. I do feel sorry for "dumping" the old beast.

Because I have a bad back, I've mounted bar-ends on the handlebar of my trike to help me get in and out of my trike. (Or whatever you call it with a tadpole trike wink  )

Although a recumbent trike is very comfortable and stable to ride, it holds one risk of injury, namely "leg suck", when your foot slips from the pedal while riding and gets underneath your trike. This can result in serious injuries. A lot of trikes are equipped with toeclips, replaced by clipless pedals by many riders.

Yesterday I did the first (short) ride of the year on my Trident Stowaway trike. Despite the cold it felt good riding again, but my legs are gonna need a lot more work out rides to become recumbent legs again. For now: easy does it, the rest will come! wink

One of the first additions to my new trike are 2 headlights. At first I was wondering about choosing battery powered lights or headlights for a hub generator. But on my other bikes I have Busch & Muller headlights on a dynamo hub and I very much like the amount of light and the dispersion of the light. So I went for the same headlights on my trike, but this time powered by a usb powerbank.
