Back to vinyl

Last week I bought myself a new toy for some “old-fashioned” entertainment:
A record player!
So time to blow the dust off of the old vinyl. A big box with long-play records and a little case filled to the brim with 45 rpm singles. It’s gonna be a trip down memory lane while listening to and digitizing my musical preferences from my youth.

Winamp: still my favourite music app

First, let this old fart explain something to those who don’t recognize this logo or know the the name “Winamp” . Once upon a time (that used to mean more than 30 years ago, nowadays it’s hardly a decade ago 🙄 ) there was a piece of software to organise your music files and listen to them, called Winamp. A very nice and versatile piece of software I might add. With the rise of the Android smartphones, an app was published. But at one time, Winamp died (not a clue as to why, but if anyone wants to find out, you might find the answer in the still active forum) it was even before streaming and such became a “thing”.

Hidden surprise

Sometimes a hidden surprise pops up that brings back a lot of memories. Today my wife was organizing a folders containing some old genealogy information. Also in that folder was an old song from the Engineer Corps from the Dutch army. This made me remember my time in the army with the 11th Engineering Battalion in the late 80’s. Man what a long time ago! 🙄

20180408 Relaxed trike touring

Yesterday I went out fora n easy and relaxed trike tride. Left a bit later than I planned (5:20 am) but is was still nice and quiet on the road. Some of the crossing on the N62 road were closed resulting in quite a hectic weekend in my village of Westdorpe due to heavy traffic. So I decided to ride the country roads and went east to greet the rising sun should the clouds give way.

E-bike? Not quite yet…

For a long time, I’ve tried to do my 60km commute as often by bike as possible. But I’m on the other side of the “magical” or “big” 50 now and struggling a bit with my body. So more and more people ask me why I don’t buy an electric assist bike. To be honest, I’ve been thinking about it now and then, but I don’t like the thought of it.

More and more e-bikes are making their way on the bike lanes. Young and old have embraced the bicycle with power assisted pedaling. But also more often, it looks like the e-bike riders can’t really deal with the difference in speed on the bike lane (specially the 45 kph pedelecs) or they think they have more rights than others. It seems like the e-bike doesn’t go well with social cycling. Ad to that that commercially there’s hardly any attention for other bicycles, and that is why I don’t like e-bikes. 😐

Anthem of Zeelandic Flanders

As some of you might know by now, I am from Zeelandic Flanders or Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. And proud of it! A beautiful part of The Netherlands (just!) Shielded by the Western Skeldt (Westerschelde) on the north, Belgium border on the south and divided into two by the channel from Gent to Terneuzen (or from Terneuzen to Gent if you so desire. 😉

It’s an area with history, several dialects, beautiful scenery (photo’s of which I’ll post with my cycling and walking posts) and proud people. Who often tend to be more Flemish than dutch, despite the lyrics in the anthem. We also have an everlasting love / hate relationship with the Belgians and the dutch and even the Germans! 😛

My “work-out” music

I know, listening to music while cycling is a touchy subject. A lot has been said about it on the net (even some seriously overheated debates), but it’s a common sight on the streets and bicycle lanes these days. And yes, I listen to music while cycling too. Mostly on my morning commute that is. At 3:30 am there’s not much traffic about, and other road users can easily be seen by their lights. So the music isn’t that much of a distraction. The only part of my morning commute where I turn the music off, is while riding through the woods. No music can beat the singing of the birds. 😉
